The cassette drives the machine. Cause and Effect, from the industrial heartland of Indianapolis, was a pioneer of the tape format, a medium through which it channeled the raw energy of the experimental underground. From 1984 to 1990, the label was a crucible for harsh soundscapes, tape manipulation, and the dark arts of cultural critique. It sculpted a sonic landscape where Dog As Master, the relentless sonic architect, found a home, delivering 13 releases that included the visceral "Pure Torture" and the notorious "Live In Memphis." Master/Slave Relationship, another frequent collaborator, wove narratives of power dynamics and submission in "Soundtrack To Black Leather Bondage" and "Bed of Perverse Dreams," using the tape deck as both a confessional and a confounded whisper. Viscera and If, Bwana added their voices to the cause, creating an interdisciplinary dialogue of sound that echoed through the network of cassette culture. The label's catalog, primarily cassette-based, was a testament to the DIY ethos, a commitment to the format that eschewed the polish of vinyl or the clarity of CD for the gritty, tactile reality of tape. A total of 76 cassette releases form the backbone of Cause and Effect's legacy, punctuated by three interdisciplinary magazines that expanded the dialogue beyond sound. Indianapolis, often overshadowed by larger cultural hubs, found in Cause and Effect a linchpin of the local experimental scene. The label's influence stretched beyond regional confines, though, as its releases circulated among the cognoscenti, a process-driven exchange of ideas and aesthetics that resonated with the curious and the committed alike.
