About

Negativland is a sculptural entity of sound, a noise collective that emerged from the San Francisco Bay Area's fertile ground of the late 1970s. Their work, a refracted prism of media critique and sonic experimentation, interrogates the liminal space between music and social commentary. With a penchant for satirical soundscapes, the group navigates the fractal edges of culture, wielding innovative sampling techniques as their primary tool. Mark Hosler and David Wills, original architects of this auditory spectacle, alongside Don Joyce and others, embarked on a journey that would see their creations echo through the interdisciplinary corridors of the avant-garde. Escape from Noise (1987) on SST marked a pivotal moment, a confluence of humor and critique wrapped in a politically charged sound collage. Their Over The Edge series, particularly Volume 3: The Weatherman (1990), further cemented their reputation for process-driven improvisation and collaborative alchemy. Negativland's 1991 release, Guns, on SST, underscores their commitment to political dimension, challenging listeners to confront the pervasive influence of media and authority. The group's diverse discography, spanning 13 releases, oscillates between cassette tapes and vinyl LPs, a testament to their commitment to format preference and label autonomy, with many works released on their own Seeland Records. Through their work, Negativland invites listeners into a conversation, a dialogue where sound becomes a vehicle for exploring cultural narratives and questioning the very nature of reality itself.
