Broken Flag, birthed in the United Kingdom during the tumultuous early 1980s, became an essential fixture in the experimental and industrial soundscape. A label sculpted by its founder, Gary Mundy, it resonated with the raw, unfiltered ethos of power electronics. Its catalog, dominated by cassette formats, was a testament to the exploratory spirit of the time, with 73 out of 89 releases etched onto magnetic tape. This choice was not merely practical but emblematic of the label's commitment to a format that embraced imperfection and decay. Ramleh, a central force within Broken Flag, encapsulated the label's ethos. From their early abrasive power electronics to more rock-inflected journeys, Ramleh's "Airborne Babel" stands as a key release, marking both an endpoint and a new path in 1995. This tape, alongside live relics like "Live 1983," captured the liminal, live improvisation and textural layering that defined the label. The dual release of "Neuengamme" on vinyl in 1990, a compilation featuring various artists, further anchored Broken Flag's place in the interdisciplinary world of harsh soundscapes and live improvisation. Meanwhile, Skullflower's "Form Destroyer" and "Birthdeath" LPs pushed the boundaries, intertwining dense, layered textures with a primal intensity. Broken Flag's roster was not a mere collection of artists but a network of kindred spirits. From the singular distortions of Kleistwahr to the transgressive sonics of Swastika Kommando, each project added a fractal dimension to the label's output.
