About

Staalplaat, emerging from the Netherlands in 1982, was not mere label but a crucible for sound. Its operations in Amsterdam and later Berlin forged a liminal space where the materiality of sound was as crucial as the music itself. Over 48 releases, Staalplaat cultivated a catalog that transcended genre, a sculpture of frequencies and formats — 37 cassettes, 5 VHS tapes, 4 LPs, and 2 magazines — each a tactile event in the auditory landscape. Étant Donnés, with five releases, and collaborations like Current 93 & Nurse With Wound, became pivotal to Staalplaat's exploratory ethos. The Legendary Pink Dots offered a fractal presence with releases like "Traumstadt 4" (1990), a tape that spiraled through the scene with psychotropic intensity. Laibach, S·Core, and Het Zweet, each with multiple releases, added layers to this interdisciplinary tapestry, challenging the linearity of sound and time. Staalplaat's "Time And Space" by Ryoji Ikeda (2000) on vinyl, and "Untitled" by O Yuki Conjugate (1995), epitomized its commitment to sonic process. Each release was a dialogue between the artist's intent and the medium's potential, an interaction that rendered each format — cassette, VHS, LP — as integral to the experience as the sound itself. The label's Berlin store further anchored its presence, a physical manifestation of its experimental mission. Staalplaat's legacy, though dormant post-2000, remains a vital node in the network of experimental music, a testament to its vision of sound as both forum and form.
