Label
Industrial Records
Industrial Records, a pioneering industrial music label from the US, was founded by Throbbing Gristle in 1976, redefining sound and art.
About
Industrial Records — the crucible where the term "industrial music" was forged. Established by the provocateurs Throbbing Gristle in 1976, the label did more than define a genre; it constructed a multidisciplinary platform where sound, visual art, and subversion collided. The United States saw this label weave an intricate tapestry from 1942 to 1990, though it was the late '70s that crowned its legacy. The label’s catalog of 108 releases is a kaleidoscope of formats, primarily cassettes and magazines, each serving as an artifact of Industrial's exploratory ethos. Throbbing Gristle dominates with 64 releases, their abrasive soundscapes etched into tape like sonic daggers. Monte Cazazza, Leather Nun, and S.P.K. add layers to this fractal narrative, while William S. Burroughs’ spoken word LP ties literary dissent to the auditory. Industrial Records wasn't just a label; it was a network, a liminal space where artists like Cabaret Voltaire and Clock DVA could experiment with interdisciplinary forms. The 1990 release of "Best of Volume... I" by Throbbing Gristle marks a capstone, a retrospective glance at a movement that reshaped the auditory landscape. The label's emphasis on self-releases and multimedia formats — especially the cassette, a sculptural medium in itself — reflects a commitment to process-driven artistry. Magazines and posters were not mere promotional tools but integral to the Industrial narrative, artifacts that contextualized the sound within a larger cultural critique.
