Cabaret Voltaire
Cabaret Voltaire, a pioneering industrial music group from the UK, blends electronic pulses with found sound, creating a unique sonic experience.
About
A sonic assembly line began rolling in Sheffield, 1973, with the inception of Cabaret Voltaire. Named after the avant-garde hub of Dadaism, the group was born from the hands of Stephen Mallinder, Richard H. Kirk, and Chris Watson. This triumvirate forged a path through the industrial wasteland, their sound an amalgam of electronic pulses and found sound manipulation. Their recordings, like the iconic "Listen Up With Cabaret Voltaire" on Mute (1990), are blueprints of mechanized rhythm and dystopian echoes. Across 87 releases, their auditory architecture evolved from raw, percussive tapes to polished vinyl on labels such as Rough Trade and Virgin. Cabaret Voltaire's discography reads like a manual on electronic subversion, with releases like "The Covenant, The Sword And The Arm Of The Lord" (1985) and "Code" (1987) marking key shifts in their relentless pursuit of sonic innovation. Embedded in the fabric of the industrial music scene, their influence is a constant hum; their collaborations and parallels with artists such as Severed Heads and Throbbing Gristle underscore their stature. Formats varied from cassette to magazine, yet the message remained functional and clear: dismantle the familiar, rebuild the auditory.
