Current 93
Current 93, a UK-based apocalyptic folk ensemble led by David Tibet, blends industrial sounds with haunting lyrical incantations.
About
In the shadowy cleft between the sacred and the profane, Current 93 emerges, a chimeric congregation led by the enigmatic David Tibet. Born from the fertile chaos of the early 1980s, the ensemble's inception was a ceremony of industrial alchemy, with abrasive tape loops and droning synthesizers weaving a stark tapestry upon which Tibet's incantations danced. Yet, it was in the mid-'80s that the group's metamorphosis took form, as if beckoned by an ancient prophecy — the advent of apocalyptic folk. Here, the raw edge of industrial sound found communion with the pastoral echoes of folk, birthing a new ritualistic soundscape. The prolific journey of Current 93 is etched in the annals of experimental music, with a treasure trove of 67 releases that span vinyl, cassettes, and the printed word. Each offering is a sigil, a glimpse into a world where Christianity, occultism, and literary arcana intermingle with the earthly and the ethereal. Among these, "Who Is The Sufferer?" and "The Starres Are Marching Sadly Home" stand as monuments to their sonic pilgrimage, each note a step along a path of esoteric exploration. Collaborations with kindred spirits such as Nurse With Wound further enrich this journey, creating dialogues that transcend the mundane. These alliances, like the strands of some cosmic web, have bound Current 93 to the heart of the experimental scene, their influence rippling outward through the ages. The vessel of Current 93 is not a solitary ark but a gathering of luminaries. Steven Stapleton, Douglas P, and Michael Cashmore are but a few who have lent their voices to this ever-evolving liturgy. Together, they craft a haunting hymn that resonates with those who seek the profound amidst the ruins of modernity.
