SHiT Tapes
SHiT Tapes is an experimental music label from Port Richey, known for its unique archive of ephemeral sounds from 1984 to 1997.
About
Nestled in the liminal and humid expanse of Port Richey, SHiT Tapes emerged as an unorthodox archive of the audibly adventurous from 1984 to 1997. This label was a process-driven carnival of ephemeral sounds, etched onto 16 cassettes and a solitary magazine. The roster reads like a sonic experiment in perpetual flux, featuring the fractal landscapes of Famlende Forsøk, whose narratives ripple through releases like "Herring Tales" and "Døve Munker Ut Av Norsk Industri." The tapes were sculptural in their rawness, each a fragment of a larger auditory mosaic. In the interdisciplinary fabric of SHiT Tapes, collaborative projects were the alchemical core. "Hymner & Hyl 85" stands as a prime example of this ethos, weaving Famlende Forsøk with Brt into a singular aural tapestry. The label's aesthetic was decidedly lo-fi, embracing the imperfections and distortions of the cassette medium as integral to the experience. The label's output ranged from the enigmatic "Døden Drømmer Livet," a 1988 release by Coalmine:5, to the found sound manipulations that defined the era. Each tape was a limited edition artifact, a transient piece of history that resisted mainstream currents and celebrated the underground's subversive spirit. The evolution of SHiT Tapes was less a linear progression and more a scattering of sonic seeds across time, each germinating in unexpected ways. While the label ceased operations in 1997, its catalog remains an exploratory map of experimental terrains, resonating with collectors and archivists who cherish the tactile and ephemeral qualities of cassette music.
