About

Skinny Puppy emerged from the shadows of Vancouver in 1982, a collaboration between cEvin Key and Nivek Ogre. The project was an escape from new wave constraints, diving into a dystopian vision of sound defined by dark synth textures and aggressive beats. Their work laid the groundwork for the electro-industrial genre, a relentless assault of avant-garde soundscapes and politically charged lyrics. Albums like "Too Dark Park" and "Rabies" became sonic manifestos—mechanical and haunting, a testament to their relentless drive. Their catalog is vast: 19 LPs, 13 cassettes, and a smattering of magazines and posters. Releases such as "Tormentor" and "Worlock" on Capitol Records captured their raw, percussive energy, while self-released live tapes like "Live Lille 12.5.88" documented their visceral stage presence. Skinny Puppy’s sound was functional; each track a piece of machinery in a dystopian factory. The band’s influence resonates through the industrial scene, akin to contemporaries like Front Line Assembly and Ministry. Yet, their Canadian roots grounded them, shaping a distinctly North American take on the genre. Despite their dissolution in 1990, the echoes of their work continue to reverberate, a mechanical heartbeat in the industrial landscape.
