Contains solo and ensemble music of the Angkola people of North Sumatra who live in the villages in or near the town of Padang Sidempuan, capital of the South Tapanuli area; The music belongs to a tradition which developed in the centuries before Muslim religion and Dutch colonial power entered the area. Performed by the following groups: - An Angkola group of gondang and gordang musicians in Batunadua, led by Baginda Nagari Siregar - An Angkola group of gondang and gordang musicians in Wele I, led by Zakaria Dalimunthe - An Angkola zikir-rapano group in Batunadua, comprising the musicians Mamin Hasibuan, Abdul Karim Pohang and Sati Hasibuan - A pair of Angkola women, Ompu Lutan and Ompu Ngeli, playing a gambang in Desa Bahal I, Portibi district, Padang Lawas The recordings made in the villages of Batunadua and Wele I (Kecamatan Padangsidempuan) and Bahal I (Kecamatan Padang Lawas), 1971 and 1972.
