About
New Bulwark Records & Tapes, an ephemeral yet impactful presence in the early 80s experimental music scene, operated from 1981 to 1986. Sculpting soundscapes predominantly through cassette, the label's brief existence yielded a concentrated catalog of 11 releases. Central to its output was the enigmatic O.R.D.U.C., whose works, like "Pink & Purple" and "pre Pink and Purple," straddled the liminal spaces of sound and silence, utilizing minimalism and tape manipulation as a sculptural tool. The Dutch label's roster, though small, reads like a manifesto of interdisciplinary sound experimentation. Among its releases, "Music For Modern Art Exhibitions, Volume Two - Blecheintopf" by De Fabriek En Wolff P. Rillings stands out as a fractal exploration of ambient textures and conceptual art integration. Ruud Kluivers' "La Nuova Altea" and Ilo Istatov's "Lines" further highlighted New Bulwark’s commitment to process-driven auditory experiences, with each tape an artifact of analog devotion. Solenoid's dual outputs, "Silex Hippopola" and "Hippopola," demonstrate a consistent engagement with field recordings and sound collage, carving out minimalist soundscapes that were both exploratory and intimate. The label's preference for the cassette format was not just a practical choice but a deliberate aesthetic decision, underscoring an allegiance to the tactile and the raw.
