About
Medicinal Tapes, a fleeting yet potent force within the French underground, operated in the liminal spaces of sound and format. Between 1986 and 1987, this label etched itself into the fabric of experimental music, releasing a series of sculptural cassette tapes and magazines that defied traditional expectations. Known for its process-driven approach, Medicinal Tapes harnessed the magnetic allure of cassette culture, offering a mere 11 releases that remain enigmatic artifacts today. Bloc Opératoire N° 2 and Radio Slaves stand as pillars of the label's auditory architecture. The former, a labyrinthine compilation of soundscapes, and the latter, a singular opus by If, Bwana, both exemplify the label's commitment to audio collage as a form of medicinal practice—sound as therapy, as confrontation. Hot Bip's Réalisme Décoratif and Los Paranos' Poules Mortes further explore the interdisciplinary nature of this sonic pharmacopeia, each tape a unique alchemical blend of noise and nuance. Grounded in cassette formats with nine distinct releases, Medicinal Tapes became a crucible for the French experimental scene, nurturing projects like Urbain Autopsy and Memphis 10SC. Their works, such as Autopsies and Beach Bop, respectively, traverse the fractal landscapes of audio experimentation, each piece a testament to the label's regional influence. Beyond audio, Medicinal Tapes ventured into the printed word with Tape-Overview and the Epsilonia Mail Art Radio Show. These magazines stitched together the textual and the auditory, extending the label's experimental ethos into paper and ink, further enriching the narrative of the era's sonic exploration.
