Media-Space
Media-Space is a German experimental music label founded in 1988, known for its unique site-specific soundscapes and collaborative audio-visual works.
About
Media-Space operated at the edge of Germany's experimental music landscape, where cassette tapes and magazine publications became portals into interdisciplinary realms. Born in 1988, the label carved a liminal space, one where site-specific soundscapes and collaborative audio-visual environments thrived. Its catalog, though succinct with 15 releases, resonates with exploratory fervor. Allan Vizents and Paul Thomas were the sculptors of sound within this auditory playground. With tapes like "PORTraits" (1984) and "Cracked Feet" (1985), their work transcended simple audio recordings, becoming process-driven performances captured on magnetic tape. "Total Feedback - Sound Drawing Performance" (1986), a pivotal release by Thomas, exemplifies this sculptural approach—where sound is drawn and redrawn in a live sonic canvas. Media-Space's dual format approach, with its 13 cassettes and 2 magazines, was not just a distribution choice but a statement of intent. The publications, such as the "Soundworks Exhibition Poster at Media Space 1985," functioned as both catalog and artifact, preserving the ephemeral nature of sound installations and performances. These magazines served as tactile interfaces, inviting the reader to engage with sound as a concept rather than merely a sensory experience. The label's activities ceased in 1986, yet its archive remains a testament to a time when audio and visual art converged in experimental unity. Media-Space, in its brief existence, offered a platform for conceptual documentation, where collaborative projects were not just encouraged but essential to its core ethos.
