Kröten Kassetten
Kröten Kassetten is an experimental music label from Berlin, known for its 30 unique cassette releases exploring sound's chaotic boundaries.
About
Kröten Kassetten emerged from the underbelly of Berlin's sonic labyrinth in 1985, a six-year fracture through which experimental sound seeped, sculpted in cassette form. With thirty releases, each a commentary on the liminal spaces between organized sound and chaotic noise, the label served as the petri dish for Das Freie Orchester’s exploratory narratives. Their final opus, "Delay 91," is a testament to sound manipulation, a fractal dance of echo and decay. Dieter Zobel's "Moschus" and "Goldstube" are sculptures of lo-fi abstraction, each layer an interdisciplinary dialogue between found sounds and synthesized anomalies. The year 1990 was pivotal, a zenith for Kröten Kassetten's aural odyssey, as evidenced by "Now 1990" — a live recording that transforms the cassette into a vessel of raw, unfiltered energy, a moment captured in its most authentic form. Jörg Thomasius, a frequent collaborator, provided works like "Feedback" and "Die Gesänge des Komparsen," which unravel the linearity of traditional composition, offering instead a process-driven experience. The convergence of Conrad Schnitzler & Gen Ken Montgomery within this magnetic field further underscores the label's commitment to sonic diversity, the cassette a canvas upon which these abstract soundscapes materialize.
