About

GGE Records operated like an underground transmitter, sending waves through the analog ether from 1942 to 1992. Nestled within the United States, the label was a haven for the experimental, the lo-fi, the unorthodox—practices etched onto 34 cassettes, each a fractal of sonic possibility. The reel-to-reel hiss of found sound and the raw intimacy of conceptual art defined its catalog, as much an archive of process as of product. In the early days, the label's releases were whispers, evolving into a chorus of collaborations and solo endeavors. Mike Crooker's "classified" and "11.17.89 Guitar" captured moments of introspection, while Ice Cream Blisters' self-titled cassette delivered an auditory slap of primal immediacy. Plastic Eye Miracle's "Euphoric Voyeurs" and "Ed Wood's Living Room" added layers of surrealist narrative to the label's sonic sculpture. GGE's Tape of the Month Club, a series of compilations, served as a conduit for diverse voices, including Chris Mezzolesta and Indian Rope Burn, whose "Anxiety" (1992) marked the label's final transmission. Each tape was a sculptural object, a tactile encounter in an era of digital abstraction, reflecting an unwavering dedication to the cassette format.
