Label
Folkways Records
Folkways Records is a U.S. label specializing in experimental music, creating a unique archive of soundscapes since 1948.
About
Folkways Records, born from the vision of Moses Asch in 1948, was a liminal space where sound became a form of cultural documentation. The label's catalog is a fractal exploration of experimental and world music, an interdisciplinary exchange that echoes through time. With each LP, Folkways carved a sculptural archive of soundscapes that defy easy categorization. Gamelan In The New World, a sonic dialogue between traditional Indonesian music and Western experimentalism, is but one example of this pioneering approach. The label's 29 releases are a testament to process-driven audacity, as heard in the avant-garde whispers of Ilhan Mimaroglu's Tract: A Composition Of Agitprop Music For Electromagnetic Tape and the environmental interactions of Jim Nollman's Playing Music With Animals. Electronic Music, Tar And Sehtar by Dariush Dolat-Shahi presents an innovative integration of Persian instruments with electronic textures, a synthesis both exploratory and timeless. Folkways Records was more than a label; it was a vessel for the voices of the marginalized and the overlooked, a platform where the likes of Charles Olson and Kenneth Patchen could speak their truth. The acquisition by the Smithsonian Institution in 1987 ensured the preservation and continuation of this vital archive, now part of Smithsonian Folkways, a living testament to Asch's vision and the enduring power of sound.
