Label
Flowmotion
Flowmotion is an experimental music label from the UK (1980-1985) known for its unique blend of sound and print in cassette culture.
About
Flowmotion operated within a liminal space, a five-year burst of activity from 1980 to 1985 that straddled the boundaries of sound and print, tangible and ephemeral. An interdisciplinary node in the UK's cassette culture, it offered a platform for artists who sculpted sound into something less like music and more like an exploratory process. Konstruktivists emerged as frontrunners, their "A Dissembly" (1983) on vinyl a fractal reflection of the label's ethos. Paul Nagle and Cosey Fanni Tutti added texture, while Maurizio Bianchi's enigmatic contributions underscored Flowmotion's commitment to the liminal. The label's catalog was an archive of potentialities: 33 cassettes, 10 magazines, and a smattering of vinyl and photographic releases. Each format was a vessel for interdisciplinary dialogue. "Time To Tell" (1983) by Cosey Fanni Tutti, released on tape, became a cornerstone, echoing the DIY spirit that defined the era. Meanwhile, "Anyone For Me" (1985) by UV Pop, a rare vinyl outing, felt like a sculptural artifact in an ocean of magnetic tape. Flowmotion's magazines, like "Flowmotion Number 7" (1983), functioned as literary echoes of their sonic counterparts. They were not merely accompaniments but integral to the label's narrative—a textual counterpoint to the auditory explorations. In the Flowmotion universe, each release was a statement, a fragment of a larger process-driven tapestry where collaboration and format diversity were keystones. The label's legacy is a testament to the power of limited editions and the enduring impact of cassette culture on experimental music's historical context.
