About

Zanstones, a project that spanned three and a half decades, thrived in the liminal spaces of cassette culture, sculpting soundscapes as ephemeral as the magnetic tape they inhabited. From the United States, Zanstones unfurled an archive of 34 self-released tapes, each a fractal exploration of lo-fi production and ambient soundscapes. The process-driven ethos of Zanstones found symmetry in the cassette format—each release a tangible artifact of sonic evolution, distributed through the intimate networks of ZH27 and Zidslick. Tracks like "Emphatic Extrapolated External Elements" (1999) and "Falling Apart Together" (1999) encapsulate the project’s interdisciplinary spirit, where found sounds and collage techniques converge in non-linear compositions. The lo-fi, ambient textures of "Crisp New Beliefs" (1998) and the experimental whimsy of "Retro Preppie Bump Magnetism" (1987) offer glimpses into a world where conventional structures dissolve, making room for the raw beauty of fragmented acoustics. Zanstones navigated the boundaries of mainstream appeal, opting instead for an internal universe that valued authentic expression over polished production. With influences resonating through kindred spirits like Dino DiMuro and Sasha Foo Foo, Zanstones carved a niche in the experimental landscape—a homage to the cassette culture’s transformative potential in the 80s and 90s.
