About
In the twilight of the 20th century, Xylem emerged from the UK's shadowy underbelly, weaving a tapestry of sound that navigated the liminal spaces between experimental tape manipulation and atmospheric soundscapes. Their auditory journey, spanning from 1986 back to 2014, is a testament to the sculptural potential of sound when stripped of conventional form. Cassette tapes bear witness to this process-driven exploration, with each release a fragment of their fractal-like evolution. Dark Star and Syzygy, labels synonymous with the underground's alchemy, cradled Xylem’s sonic experiments. Albums such as "Dark Corridors" (1986) and "Elephants Pursued By Flying Men" (1985) stand as pivotal points, capturing dissonant textures and minimalist compositions that challenge the listener's perception of space and time. These releases are not mere auditory experiences but interdisciplinary dialogues with the physical world, channeling field recordings into visceral encounters. The choice of format—cassette—was not incidental but integral. It was a medium that mirrored their ethos: raw, tactile, and intimate. Xylem's work does not unfold in linear narratives but in spectral layers, each a conduit for water-like nutrients flowing through the listener's consciousness, much like the very tissue their name suggests.
