Artist
Whitehouse
Whitehouse, a pioneering power electronics artist from the UK, unleashes extreme soundscapes that challenge musical boundaries since 1980.
About
Whitehouse detonated into existence in 1980, erupting from the UK underground with an agenda to obliterate music's comfort zones. William Bennett helmed this sonic onslaught, a relentless pursuit of total audio extremity that crystallized into the power electronics genre. Not just sound but a tectonic force, Whitehouse wielded synthesizers and provocative themes like weapons, with a mission to saturate every possible format — 50 cassettes, 14 LPs, a smattering of VHS, and magazines morphing into manifestos. The trio — Bennett, Peter Sotos, and Philip Best — stood as high priests of chaos from 1982 to 2003, invoking ecstatic annihilation through live performances that were nothing short of ritualistic. Witness Geneva's 'Live Action 64' or New York's Mudd Club inferno, where feedback loops and harsh vocals merged into an overwhelming cacophony, demolishing any notion of passive listening. 'Whisky Agogo, 08.02.82' remains carved into noise history, a testament to their live improvisation prowess. 'Cruise (Force The Truth)' in 2000 marked a climactic point, a saturated synthesis of the group's trajectory — the final vinyl echo of an era. Yet, the true canvas of Whitehouse was live action, where the visceral impact transcended into a physical experience, the sound so dense it became corporeal, a brutal dialogue with the audience.
