Visage
Visage, a pioneering synth-pop band from the UK, defined the New Romantic movement with hits like 'Fade to Grey' and a distinctive 80s sound.
About
Visage emerged from London's nocturnal depths in 1978, as a spectral force in the synth-pop realm. Steve Strange, the enigmatic figure at the forefront, aligned with Midge Ure and Billy Currie, among others, to distill the New Romantic spirit into sound. Their self-titled debut (1980, Polydor) and the seminal hit "Fade to Grey" transformed analog warmth into anthems, capturing the fleeting elegance of their era. The band's output, including "The Anvil" and "Pleasure Boys," shimmered with the austere precision of synthesizers, while Strange's aesthetic became a visual counterpart to their sonic identity. These releases, wrapped in Polydor's embrace, resonated with audiences, securing two Top 20 albums and multiple charting singles. Yet, the spectral allure dimmed by 1983, as commercial ambitions waned, leading to dissolution. Visage remains a skeletal monument to the intersection of style and sound, their analog echoes lingering in the annals of synth-pop history.
