Artist
Vice Versa
Vice Versa, a minimal synth duo from Sheffield, England, emerged in 1978 with a unique blend of heavy psych and skeletal rhythms.
About
Vice Versa cast their spectral presence over the late-1970s Sheffield scene, an epoch when analog warmth and skeletal rhythms converged. Stephen Singleton and Mark White distilled the essence of minimal synth into a precise, nocturnal form. Their sound, an austere whisper amidst the clamor of the industrial city, emerged from the shadows in 1978. The duo, part of the vanguard defining the Sheffield sound, mixed heavy psych influences with experimental aesthetics, leaving a spectral trace on the underground scene. Their output was as much about the visual and the written as it was the audible. Vice Versa's contributions to the printed landscape — ten magazine releases — reveal a commitment to the broader artistic narrative. These publications, from "Vice Versa in ZigZag 1978" to "Vice Versa Information Jazz Drugs," complemented their sonic endeavors, cementing their place in the cultural fabric of the time. Neutron Records released their cassette "8 Aspects of" in 1980, a skeletal blueprint of their analog explorations. The later release of "Electrogenesis 1978-1980" on Vinyl On Demand served as a retrospective touchstone, capturing the embryonic energy of their early years. This compilation remains a precise document of their sonic evolution. The dissolution of Vice Versa in 2014 marked the end of a spectral journey. Yet their influence lingers, spectral and precise, among similar artists like Snowy Red and Xeno & Oaklander. In this nocturnal soundscape, Vice Versa remains a specter of Sheffield's analog past.
