About

This Heat emerged from the liminal spaces of Camberwell, London, where Charles Bullen, Charles Hayward, and Gareth Williams sculpted sound into a fractal exploration of post-everything aesthetics. Their debut, self-titled album (1979, Piano), presented a process-driven fusion of musique concrète and live improvisation, each track a sonic experiment challenging traditional structures. "Deceit" (1981, These Records) further dismantled musical conventions, capturing the anxiety of its era with precision and raw energy. Live Krefeld 1980, released on Independence, showcases their ability to transform performance into an interdisciplinary spectacle, where tape manipulations and live instrumentation coalesce into an intricate auditory tapestry. These performances, often self-released on cassette, underscored their resistance to mainstream commodification, reinforcing their status as pioneers. Their influence reverberates through the works of Glenn Branca and the sonic abrasions of Swans, as This Heat's legacy persists in the experimental rock continuum. They dissolved in 1982, yet the echoes of their explorations continue to resonate, challenging listeners to engage with sound as a dynamic process.
