In the late 1970s, amidst the urban sprawl of Deptford, London, Storm Bugs emerged as a mechanical force within the cassette culture scene. Philip Sanderson and Steven Ball, the duo behind the noise, crafted a soundscape that was both dystopian and functional. Their early outputs, like "Gift" (1981) on Snatch Tapes, are relics of an era where DIY ethos met post-punk influences head-on, the tape hiss becoming a relentless percussion in its own right. Storm Bugs operated within an industrial aesthetic, their music a metronomic commentary on societal decay. Releases such as "Metamorphose" (1981) on L'Invitation Au Suicide capture the raw edge of their sound, a collage of noise and experimentation.
