About
Robert Rental was a pioneering figure in experimental and industrial music during the late 1970s and early 1980s. Operating at the intersection of noise, dark ambient, and avant-garde composition, Rental released a body of work characterized by unconventional sound design and harsh textures. His debut album Paralysis arrived in 1978, establishing his aesthetic approach to abstract, often abrasive sonic landscapes. This was followed by Mental Detentions, a self-released cassette in 1979 that showcased his DIY ethos and experimental methodology. Double Heart, released on the influential Mute Records in 1980, marked a significant label release and further cemented his presence in the underground experimental scene. Rental's work influenced the broader industrial and noise music communities, contributing to the development of darker, more abstract approaches to electronic and experimental composition during a formative period for these genres.
