About

Palais Schaumburg, a spectral presence in the NDW scene of early '80s Germany. Their brief but impactful tenure from 1980 to 1982 left a cold, austere mark. Holger Hiller's vocal delivery, precise and detached, combined with Thomas Fehlmann’s synthesizer and trumpet work, to create minimalist synth textures that resonated with the industrial backdrop of their homeland. Their self-titled debut on Virgin (1981) captured this mechanical elegance, while releases like "Wir Bauen Eine Neue Stadt" (1982, Phonogram) offered a skeletal framework of German lyrical themes and analog warmth. The ensemble's commitment to the DIY ethos was etched into their format preference. Tapes, like the self-released "Live 20-6-1982," documented their live energy — raw and unfiltered. Collaborations with ZickZack Platten further entrenched their place within the underground. The cassette format, varied and abundant, was their canvas, each release a snapshot of nocturnal intensity. The collective's ephemeral existence belied the strength of their sonic architecture. F.M. Einheit's brief tenure on drums added a skeletal rhythm to the early works. As members shifted, the core remained — a cold elegance, encapsulated in their live recordings and minimalist approach. Palais Schaumburg's legacy persists in these artifacts, a testament to their precise and austere vision.
