About
Not 1/2 was an industrial and experimental music project active during the mid-1980s, operating within the cassette culture underground of the industrial and noise music scenes. The project released three cassette works through Industrial Therapy Unit between 1986 and 1987, establishing themselves as part of the DIY ethos that characterized independent industrial music production of that era. Their releases—Experiments In The Connections Between Sounds, Music, And Noise and Music For The Severely Conscious (both 1986), followed by I Was A Teenage Communist! (The Secret Confessions Of Oliver North) (1987)—reflect a conceptual approach to sound design and experimental composition. The project's titles suggest an engagement with both abstract sonic exploration and political or social commentary, themes common to industrial music of the period. Not 1/2 contributed to the broader underground network of experimental musicians working in tape-based media during the 1980s, when cassette distribution remained a primary vehicle for avant-garde and industrial artists outside mainstream commercial channels.
