About

In the liminal spaces where sound becomes both sculptural and fractal, Morphogenesis carved their niche from 1985 to 1991, operating out of the UK. Here, sound is not merely heard but excavated, with each tape and LP a stratified layer of auditory exploration. The collective — a dynamic assembly of Clive Graham, Fred Sansom, Roger Sutherland, Adam Bohman, Ron Briefel, Clive Hall, Michael Prime, and Andy Cordery — embraced the unpredictability of process-driven improvisation. Releases like "Stromatolites" (1991, Direction Music) and "Prochronisms" (1989, Pogus Productions) rendered sound as an evolving organism, each piece an aural landscape morphing before the listener's ears. Their work, much like the biological concept they borrowed their name from, was about development and transformation — where tape manipulation, abstract soundscapes, and field recordings coalesce into improvisational structures. Morphogenesis moved through labels such as Generations Unlimited and Pogus Productions, yet their self-released tapes ensured a direct transmission of their raw, interdisciplinary ethos. Shared affinities with Organum and The New Blockaders situate them firmly within a network that prioritizes sound as a medium of inquiry and invention.
