About
The Mnemonists operated in a world of abstract soundscapes, active from 1979 to 1985, crafting aural environments that defy easy categorization. Emerging from the depths of DYS (Label) and later associated with Rē Records and Recommended Records, their sonic output is a complex tapestry of textural noise and layered compositions. Releases like "Mnemonist Orchestra / Some Attributes Of A Living System" (1985) and "Horde" (1984) on Recommended Records stand as monuments of their relentless pursuit of non-traditional instrumentation. Their work, often pressed on vinyl, reflects a format preference that aligns with their dense, mechanical sound. With seven LPs and a singular cassette, the Mnemonists created a deliberate cadence of releases. Records such as "Gyromancy" (1984) and "Roto-limbs" (1981) on tape, present a meticulous exploration of sonic possibilities, rooted in the industrial ethos of their time. Alongside contemporaries like Biota and P16.D4, Mnemonists carved out a niche within the experimental noise scene. Their sound is a relentless, dystopian march through abstract compositions, a testament to the functional use of noise as art.
