About

Malaria! emerged from West Berlin's shadowy corners in 1981, a spectral presence led by Gudrun Gut and Bettina Köster. Following the dissolution of Mania D, they crafted a sound that fused the austere edges of Neue Deutsche Welle with the skeletal ferocity of no wave. Spanning tapes and LPs, their work—such as the visceral "Emotion" (1983, Columbia) and the nocturnal "Beat The Distance" (1985, Rebel Rec.)—echoed the analog warmth of a city in flux. Their live performances, raw and uncompromising, stood as spectral gatherings of the avant-garde. Malaria!'s lineup, including Manon P. Duursma, Christine Hahn, and Susanne Kuhnke, operated within a DIY ethos, marking each release with a precise, cold elegance. The collective's output was a nocturnal exploration, deeply entrenched in the West Berlin scene alongside contemporaries like Einstürzende Neubauten and Deutsch Amerikanische Freundschaft. Their analog sequences and stark rhythms remain a testament to an era when music was both a refuge and a rebellion.
