M.A.L.
Obscure 1980s experimental industrial project with cassette releases on Grafika Airlines and later vinyl reissues on Vinyl on Demand.
About
M.A.L. is an obscure experimental and industrial music project that emerged during the early 1980s underground cassette culture. The project released a series of lo-fi works on independent labels, beginning with Chemistry Album and Two Faces, both issued on Grafika Airlines in 1981 and 1982 respectively. These early cassette releases established M.A.L.'s approach to harsh, experimental soundscapes characteristic of the post-industrial underground scene. Following a period of relative inactivity, M.A.L. returned with Outlaw in 1986 on the Insane Music label, maintaining their commitment to uncompromising experimental aesthetics. The project remained largely obscure until 2011, when Vinyl on Demand reissued material as The M.A.L. Tapes on LP format, introducing the work to vinyl collectors and archivists interested in rediscovered underground industrial music from the cassette era. M.A.L.'s discography reflects the DIY ethos and sonic experimentation prevalent in 1980s underground music scenes, though detailed information regarding specific personnel, production techniques, or the project's broader influence remains limited. The belated vinyl reissue suggests growing recognition of the project within experimental and industrial music circles.
