About
Kraang, the project of John Murphy performing under various aliases including Kang, Krang, and Kranng, is an influential figure in underground experimental and industrial music. Active since the early 1980s, Kraang created dense, challenging sonic works that blended noise, dark ambient, and experimental electronic elements. The project's earliest documented release, Krang Music, appeared in 1981 as a self-released cassette, followed by the cassette Neurasthenia on Extreme in 1983. These foundational works established Kraang's aesthetic of uncompromising, textural composition that prioritized atmosphere and abstraction over conventional song structures. Later releases demonstrate continued evolution, including collaborative work documented on the 1994 cassette Ordination / Slaughter Of Natives released on Zero Cabal. The compilation Uro: 1981-83, released by Tesco Organisation in 2000, compiled early material and provided retrospective context for Kraang's significant contributions to the experimental music underground. Throughout a prolific career spanning decades, Kraang maintained an uncompromising approach to sound design and composition within industrial and noise music circles.
