With the release of Vertraag-De Tijd on Kubus Kassettes in 1981, van der Kaap contributed to the burgeoning European cassette culture that fostered experimental music outside mainstream channels. The project represents the minimalist, atmospheric sensibilities characteristic of early dark ambient and industrial experimentation emerging from the Netherlands during this period.
