About
Etat Brut emerged from the industrial depths of Belgium, a machine of sound grinding to life in 1979. Their work, a relentless exploration of harsh soundscapes and tape manipulation, offered a dystopian vision captured mostly on cassette. With 10 out of 11 releases in this format, they embraced the mechanical and ephemeral nature of magnetic tape. The clang of found objects and the hum of live improvisations became their signature, creating dark atmospheres that echoed the industrial wastelands of Europe. Releases like "Emissions 01" (1987) on Club Moral and "Mutations Et Prothèses" (1986) document a group committed to the raw, the visceral, the functional. Collaboration with labels such as Sub Rosa and Club Moral placed them in a network of like-minded artists, allying with the likes of La Nomenklatur and P16.D4. Their sound, while harsh and unyielding, was meticulously constructed, a testament to their understanding of industrial music's mechanical heart. Etat Brut's live performances — notably in V2 Den Bosch and Pali Kao Paris in 1981 — were events of percussive chaos and structured noise, capturing the metronomic pulse of the industrial world they inhabited. Their dissolution in 1987 left behind a legacy of sound as brutal as the name suggests, a relic of a time when music was forged from the remnants of a dystopian reality.
