About

Erik Vonna-Michell is an experimental artist active in the late 1970s underground cassette scene. Working primarily with tape-based composition and sound manipulation, Vonna-Michell created abstract sonic works characterized by textural exploration and unconventional recording techniques. His releases on the independent Balsam Flex label, including "Hums & Clicks / Opus No.2&3" (1978), "Ohnar Confinement" (1979), and "Orange Wipes" (1979), exemplify the DIY ethos of cassette culture and early industrial experimentation. These works feature minimal, process-oriented approaches emphasizing raw sound sources, clicks, hums, and ambient textures over traditional musical structures. Vonna-Michell also contributed to the "Submissions to the Laughingstock Compilation" on Widemouth Tapes, further establishing his presence within the experimental underground networks of the era. Though relatively obscure, his output represents an important document of the avant-garde cassette movement and tape-based experimental practice during the post-industrial emergence of underground sound art.
