About
Erik Mälzner. A name buried in obscurity yet echoing through the avant-garde corridors of France. From 1982 to 1992, he crafted tapes for the discerning ear. Pianos at the forefront, but not in the way you'd expect. Mälzner twisted classical European traditions into experimental forms that defied easy listening. "Grey Eminence" marked his entrance — a stark introduction to his unyielding vision. Under the shadow of No Edition, Mälzner's works like "13 Aural Works of the Fine Arts for Different Instruments, Voice and Tapes" (1985) and "Sketchbook Part Six - Skizzenbuch Teil Neun" (1988) challenged the listener, demanding engagement with their complex, layered structures. "Paradigmenwechsel" (1987) teased shifts in sonic paradigms, while "Disconcert" (1990) lived up to its name — unsettling, disorienting. His final opus, "Vorsicht (8 Stücke für den Laienbedarf)" in 1992, distilled a lifetime of avant-garde experimentation into an abrasive exit. Eight pieces. For the layman’s demands. But Mälzner never catered to demands. His legacy remains, etched in cassette tape, untouched by time's erosion.
