Devo
Devo, an art punk band from Akron, Ohio, blends quirky rhythms and satirical lyrics with electronic precision since the 1980s.
About
Devo emerged from the rust belt of Akron, Ohio. Gerald Casale and Mark Mothersbaugh led this art punk ensemble through a landscape of analog warmth and satirical detachment. Their skeletal rhythms and spectral lyrics mocked consumer culture while embracing a futuristic aesthetic. With "Freedom Of Choice" (1980, Virgin), Devo melded punk's raw energy with electronic precision, creating a sound both quirky and rhythmic. Earlier, their self-released "Vintage Basement 1974-1977" captured the band's experimental essence, a basement echo of things to come. Affiliations with Stiff Records and Virgin bolstered their audacious vision. "Duty Now For The Future" (1979, Virgin) and "B Stiff" (1978, Stiff Records) illustrated their evolution from raw basement tapes to polished vinyl, challenging listeners with every release. In the nocturnal corridors of art punk, Devo's analog signals remain as crisp and precise as the day they were encoded.
