Coum Transmissions
Coum Transmissions, an industrial music collective from the UK, merges avant-garde sound with performance art, challenging societal norms.
About
In the liminal spaces between performance, sound, and visual art, Coum Transmissions operated as an interdisciplinary crucible — a conduit for the alchemical interplay of Dadaist irreverence and surrealist provocations. Emerging from Hull's industrial grit, the collective, helmed by Genesis Breyer P-Orridge, sculpted a process-driven practice that rejected conventional British society’s decorum. Their provocations were not mere artistic gestures but confrontations with the societal mores of the time, often unsettling the very fabric of what was considered acceptable. Their scant sonic output, a single LP amid a sea of magazines, posters, and postcards, might suggest a minor musical footprint. Yet, the subversive performance art that dominated their creative output reverberated through the underground networks, leaving indelible marks on the industrial scene and beyond. Pieces like the infamous "Prostitution Show Invitation Card" and the visceral "Cosey performance Photo Women's Roll" served as both artifacts and acts of defiance, challenging viewers to question and redefine art's role in society. The collective's collaboration with figures such as Monte Cazazza and their subsequent transition into Throbbing Gristle underscore their significance as progenitors of industrial music's confrontational aesthetics. Coum's engagement in marginal art exploration was both a reflection and a catalyst of the turbulent cultural currents of the 1970s. Their work, fractal and ever-unfolding, continues to inspire those drawn to the exploratory fringes of sound and performance.
