About
Contrastate was an experimental noise and industrial project active during the late 1980s and 1990s. Emerging from the UK underground music scene, the project released a series of provocatively-titled works that reflected the confrontational aesthetics of noise and industrial music of that era. Their discography includes Seven Hands Seek Nine Fingers (1989) and A Thousand Badgers In Labour (1990), establishing their presence in the experimental underground. Later releases such as A Live Coal Under The Ashes (1992) and Throwing Out The Baby With The Bathwater (1995) appeared on the prominent Tesco Organisation label, a key imprint for avant-garde and noise music. The project's work exemplified the darker, more abrasive tendencies within experimental music circles of the period, contributing to the broader landscape of UK industrial and noise music during a particularly fertile era for such underground activity.
