About

Chris McGregor's Brotherhood of Breath was a South African jazz ensemble that emerged in the late 1960s, led by pianist and composer Chris McGregor. The group represented an important fusion of post-bop jazz with pan-African musical influences and experimental approaches. Their early output, including Very Urgent (1968), established their reputation within the contemporary jazz underground. The eponymous 1971 release and subsequent albums Brotherhood (1972) and Live at Willisau (1974) documented their evolving sound, which emphasized collective improvisation and rhythmic complexity. By the late 1970s, as evidenced by Procession (1978), the group continued pushing compositional boundaries within the avant-garde jazz idiom. Though not aligned with industrial or noise music proper, the Brotherhood of Breath remained influential within experimental music circles for their uncompromising approach to ensemble jazz and their role in bringing African musical perspectives to European and international avant-garde audiences. The group's live performances were particularly celebrated for their intensity and spontaneity.
