Catharsist was an experimental noise and industrial project active during the mid-1980s, operating primarily within the underground cassette culture that defined the era's DIY electronic music scene. The project released five cassettes through Caustic Tapes between 1985 and 1988, establishing themselves as part of the prolific tape-based underground that emerged from the post-industrial and noise music communities. Their releases—including Necrobta R.I.P, Maelstrom, Dimension Dementia, Subtroprotomnemoneurobioneutronic Warp, and Words From Apoca Lips—showcase a commitment to abrasive, abstract soundscapes and experimental composition characterized by distorted electronics, layered textures, and conceptual depth.
