About
Browning Mummery operated within the cassette culture of the 1980s, crafting dark soundscapes from the heart of Australia. The name might echo the past of an opera tenor, but the music was anything but traditional. Each release carried a dystopian weight, a ritualistic presence woven through layered textures and avant-garde influences. With "Opera" (1989) on Cosmic Conspiracy Productions, Browning Mummery closed out a prolific six-year run of relentless output. Earlier works like "Obiter Scripta" (1984, 1985) on Extreme label and "Oracles And Prescriptions" (1983, 1985) on BoxMusik showcased a commitment to the cassette format, a medium that mirrored the raw, unfiltered essence of the sound. Collaborations extended to similar sonic experimenters such as Sigillum S and Premature Ejaculation, further embedding Browning Mummery in the global network of industrial and experimental music. The releases are artifacts of functional sound, capturing the mechanical and percussive within the confines of magnetic tape. With each play, the listener becomes part of a ritual, a functional act of sonic archaeology.
