About

In the cacophony of London's experimental scene, the Bow Gamelan Ensemble erupted in 1983, a triumvirate of sonic architects: Anne Bean, Paul Burwell, Richard Wilson — weaving the metallic clangs and ethereal resonances of gamelan through the industrial landscapes of Bow. Their performances were ecstatic collisions of sound and spectacle, obliterating conventional boundaries between music and environment. In the shadow of Three Mills, amidst the raw, tectonic beauty of the River Lea, they forged an immersive experience — site-specific, saturated with atmosphere, an overwhelming blend of sound and space. "Great Noises That Fill The Air" (1988, Klinker Zoundz) captures their essence: a vinyl testament to their ephemeral art. The ensemble's rare releases, scattered across cassette tapes and magazines, document a decade of total engagement with the world as their stage. By 1993, the Bow Gamelan Ensemble had dissolved, leaving behind resonant echoes in every space they transformed.
