Bodycocktail operates within a liminal space where the act of creation becomes an intimate dialogue between oddball intuition and tape hiss. From 1993 to 1998, Zan Hoffman has been the singular force behind this endeavor, sculpting abstract soundscapes with a penchant for lo-fi aesthetics that defy linearity. The medium of choice: cassette, a format that echoes the ephemeral yet enduring nature of the work itself — 23 releases etched into magnetic tape, each a fractal of exploration. The sound world of Bodycocktail is a mosaic of tape manipulation, where collage techniques unravel into non-linear compositions. The 1998 release "Enlivened Circumstances" on Zidslick and "Nifty Skew" on ZH27, along with others like "Corridors Of Floors And Doors," present a process-driven approach to music that challenges conventional listening. Each tape is a corridor, a series of floors and doors, inviting listeners to wander through its labyrinthine architecture. The labels Kitti Tapes, Mystery Hearsay, ZH27, and Zidslick form an interconnected web, a network that supports and propels the exploratory spirit of Bodycocktail. It is within this interdisciplinary field that the project finds kinship with similarly minded artists like CRIPURE S.A., Yximalloo, and Kimberly Kubus — each navigating their own idiosyncratic paths.
