Band Of Holy Joy
Band Of Holy Joy, a neofolk band from London, crafts haunting narratives of urban decay through eclectic instrumentation since 1984.
About
In the shadowed alleyways of London, amidst the echoes of a city transforming, Band of Holy Joy emerged like a fevered dream in 1984. This ensemble, a congregation led by the enigmatic Johny Brown, wove narratives that sang of urban decay and rekindled the spirit of forgotten fairytales. Their sonic tapestry, first unfurled in the lo-fi whispers of tapes like "The Devil and the Deep Blue Sea," captured the raw pulse of the streets with an alchemical blend of eclectic instrumentation and narrative lyricism. A band of many forms, they wandered through the decade, releasing tales under the ephemeral banners of ByeBye Baby and Cause for Concern. Their early works, self-released and cloaked in the DIY ethos, spoke with an authenticity that was both stark and elemental. "When Stars Came Out To Play" (1987) offered a glimpse into a world where the mundane met the mythological, a testament to their ability to conjure vivid scenes with sound. After a period of silence, the band reemerged in 2002, their name restored and their spirit undiminished. Their return was marked by "More Favourite Fairytales For Juvenile Delinquents" (2016), a release that echoed the past yet stood resolute in the present. Theirs is a journey through melody and melancholy, a ritualistic dance upon the ruins of a bygone era. Band of Holy Joy's legacy lies not only in their recordings but in their live performances, where each note becomes an invocation, each lyric a fragment of a larger myth. Their story is one of resilience and reinvention, a band that refuses to fade into the annals of history, instead writing their own hymn to the enduring power of music.
