Alternative TV
Alternative TV, a pioneering art punk band from late 1970s London, fused reggae rhythms with punk's raw edge, creating a distinct sound.
About
In the late 1970s' London, Alternative TV emerged as a spectral presence on the punk scene. With Mark Perry at the helm and Alex Fergusson shaping the early sound, they wove reggae-infused rhythms into the skeletal framework of punk. Their debut, "The Image Has Cracked" (1978, Radiation Reissues), unraveled the raw edges of punk with avant-garde precision, setting a nocturnal tone for subsequent releases. "Vibing Up The Senile Man (Part One)" (1979, Deptford Fun City Records) ventured further into the austere terrain of art punk, challenging listeners with its skeletal dissonance. By 1986, "Welcome To The End Of Fun" (Noiseville Records) marked their dissolution, a release that encapsulated the analog warmth of their genre-blending exploration. Alternative TV's sonic evolution was not a descent into commercial appeal but an ascent into experimental austerity, leaving traces of analog warmth in their wake. A brief flicker in the annals of punk, yet their spectral influence endures.
